How to teach your kids the basics to prevent blocked drains

Parents quickly learn that they need to keep an eye out for their little ones when it comes to bathroom routines. Kids tend to play with toilet paper and other objects when using the toilet, sink, shower or bathtub.

While it can be quite fun for kids, it can be a nightmare for parents when they discover they have a blocked drain from a preventable accident.

At Jab Plumbing, we receive countless calls from parents asking for advice on how to unblock their drain from excess toilet paper, toys and household items.

Here are some helpful tips on how to teach your kids the basics on preventing blocked drains.

1. Make a pile of items that can be flushed down the drain. Then make another pile of items that should be never flushed down the drain. It’s important to show real tangible examples to your children as some of them may have stronger photographic memory than others.

2. Show your children a YouTube video of what happens when a drain is blocked. This will give them a visual representation of how much can actually fit down a drain. They will also get a sense of how much effort it will take to unblock the drain.

3. Empower your children by making them bathroom and kitchen sink ambassadors. Encourage them to pay attention to anything they put down the drain and ask them to report back when in doubt. Also, reward them with a treat (they are unpaid ambassadors after all).

4. If you need to unblock a drain in your home, get your children involved in the process. If you lead by example, they will understand how much their actions really count - and contribute to the household.

5. Accidents do happen. As children need to learn and grow, Jab Plumbing can assist with any situation that requires extra care and support. We are happy to answer any questions your children may have if you require our service.
